About the work
The stone lies in the grass at the edge of an old cherry orchard, as if someone had spat it out from a great height. It is four metres long and made of bent oak slats, which Yuka Nomura prepared on site at Brezina over three weeks in August.
The artist works with impermanence. The wood is untreated, so year by year the shape will darken, settle and eventually crumble back into the soil the orchard grew from. You can walk around the work and step inside it – there is a single place to sit within.
The orchard was planted in the 1950s by people from the surrounding streets. The stone refers to what remains of a planting once no one remembers who planted the trees.
Artist
Yuka Nomura
Yuka Nomura was born in 1994 in Gifu, Japan. In 2019 she completed her master’s degree in sculpture at the Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts, and in 2017 she spent an exchange at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work explores the fundamental forces that shape everyday life, society and nature, expressing through sculpture and installation a particular sense of the time that flows through them.
In her earlier work, too, Yuka Nomura examines the relationship between people, nature and the environment around us. Through sculptures and spatial installations she works with natural motifs, movement and the passing of time. Her pieces often feel like a record of a specific moment or a quiet natural event, turned into a new story and a prompt to look at the landscape more attentively.
